Worship at Reedwood

The earliest Friends groups met for worship without prearranged programming, waiting to speak or sing as the Holy Spirit directed. Some Friends still use this classic Quaker approach to worship. Reedwood (and most Friends worldwide) uses forms of worship more familiar to other Christians, with hymns, praise songs, sermons, choir music, children's messages, drama and other planned elements. However, we continue to hold up the ideal of worship arising from the leadership of the Spirit; the silence of reverence and awe before God is the context out of which we express our worship.

During our worship services, there is almost always a substantial period of silence, sometimes called "open worship" or "communion after the manner of Friends," during which we may become especially aware of the presence of the Living Christ. During this period one or more worshippers may feel prompted to stand and speak, pray or sing as they feel led by God.

Our meetings for worship are usually led by one or more of the pastors, but we seek the involvement of as many as possible in worship leadership and music. Guest speakers during worship are not uncommon from within the church and from the wider Christian community. The choir and drama teams give other opportunities for participation in worship leadership.
